Must-Haves for the Job

It has been said that being thoroughly equipped for a job equates to being halfway done with the job itself. And that is exactly just how crucial getting the right tools and supplies is to your DIY artificial grass project. As such, before starting out on your project, here is a list of the tools and supplies that you will need to secure.

  1. Tape measure
  2. Road bases such as a Type MOT
  3. Little water
  4. Rake, leveller and shovel
  5. Compactor
  6. Very sharp knife (Ensure you have many blades)
  7. Synthetic turf joining tape
  8. Hammer
  9. 100 mm flathead nails screws or ground pins
  10. Steady and reliable power outlet
  11. Power broom or a stiff-bristled broom
  12. Whitewash sand
  13. Power blower and Power Brush
  14. Step 1: Removing Existing Turf

The very first thing to do is to remove all existing turf from your choice of a site for the installation. A simple gardening tool such as a spade would suffice for small jobs. Using a spade for a large area will definitely prove tedious; in which case you are better off using a turf cutter or a Dingo. Dig out to a depth of between 70-100 mm depending if the area will have heavy traffic passing it.

Step 2: Prepare A Base for the Installation

For the base installation, you can choose to have a fine road base (Type1 MOT) Spread the base for your installation site using a rake and leveller to ensure proper drainage. For the best results, sprinkle some water over this spread before compacting.  For compacting, use a power compactor going over several times.  At the end of this step, you should have an evenly flat and hard base.

Step 3: Laying the Artificial Grass

After careful preparation of the site, the next step is the actual laying of the grass.  For this it is important to ensure that you carefully measure the artificial grass you will need for the area. With a tape measure in hand and a sharp knife, you can cut pieces that approximately fit within the edges selected. Use the sharp knife in clean cutting strokes to trim the edges accordingly. Also, ensure that each roll is laid out in the same direction as this will make the final layout even more attractive and even.

Having patches all around would not do for a beautiful finish. That is not to mention the fact that the pieces will be moving around so much and so many undesirable materials can easily get in between the pieces.   That is why you will need to join the different pieces for an attractive spread.  For this task, you will use the synthetic turf joining tape; being careful to ensure that no pieces overlap at the joint and that no artificial grass fibres get entangled in the tape.

Your choice of artificial grass will greatly influence your experience of this step. Perth Artificial Grass products are designed for easy installation, rolling out quite easily and without creasing. We are the supplier of choice for artificial grass installation DIY enthusiasts like you from across the region.

Step 4: Holding Down the Grass and Making Sure the Joining Line is Not Visible

Being subjected to any form of traffic will definitely make your synthetic turf move around in its place. This is very undesirable and what you can do to avoid this eventuality is to secure or hold down the artificial grass firmly onto the base.  You can choose to use ground pins or hammer down flathead nails at regular intervals along the edges. The recommended interval is at about every 150-400 mm. To join two pieces of turf together, it’s advisable to use a combination of joining tape and pins. To ensure you get the ‘invisible line’, you need to ensure you have a super sharp Stanley knife and really take your time so that when its joined, there is no gap between each piece and also does not overlap causing a bump in the turf.

Step 5: Adding Sand as an Infill

Adding sand infill has so many benefits for your DIY artificial grass installation. Spread the recommended 10-15 Kgs per square meter of your new artificial grass lawn and enjoy the benefits, these include a more solid feel on the underfoot as you walk around as well as superior drainage performance.  The sand also gets in between the synthetic grass blades, helping the artificial turf remain erect at all times, regardless of the pile height. For better results, you can always use a sand spreader or blower to spread the sand even more evenly on the synthetic turf.

Step 6: Power Brushing

Finally, finish off by using a power brush or broom to spread the sand evenly on the synthetic turf and bring up the turf for that fresh look. And of course, don’t forget to clean up.
